Writer's Checklist

The American Foreign Service Association (AFSA) will not be an acceptable topic for your essay. AFSA, established in 1924, is the professional association of the United States Foreign Service, and is also the sponsor of this contest.

• Title

• Your essay demonstrates a clear understanding of the role of members of the Foreign Service in conducting U.S. diplomacy in connection with your chosen topic.

• Your essay has a main point and presents several specific examples to prove it. In the course of your essay the issue being discussed is clearly explained, and

• With the help of the MLA handbook and your computer's spell-check program, mechanical details have been attended to, including

• spelling

• punctuation

• page numbers

• paragraphs

• internal citations and a comprehensive list of sources consulted at end of essay to give proper credit to your sources of information.

• You have included four copies of your essay in the package.

• You and your teacher have both signed and dated your registration form.

*NOTE: All these criteria must be met in order for your essay to be judged.

How will the essays be judged?

1. Quality of research (1/3)
There must be adequate research on the facts of the Foreign Service members' role in resolving the United States international issue.

2. Quality of analysis (1/3)
The essay is presented clearly with a concise argument to support your view.

3. Style and mechanics (1/3)
The essay must have a clear structure with a title, an introduction, body, conclusion and bibliography.
